You can can become a Kentucky and National Registry certified EMT. Our Basic EMT class is open to the general public as well as emergency responders, however, all students must enroll in the Elizabethtown Community and Technical College to attend the program.

EMT Student Information
The EMT class is offered in the spring (January-May) and the fall (August-December) semesters. Generally, classes meet two nights a week and 3 or 4 Saturdays. The class is 6 college credit hours with a total in class time of 170 hours.
  • Purpose of the EMT course
    • Teach responsibilities in performing emergency care and operations.
    • Develop diagnostic skills in emergency treatment procedures.
    • Develop skill in the use of and care of life-saving equipment.
    • Produce candidates qualified to take the National Registry skills and written exam (75% overall average).
  • Requirements for Applicants
    • All applicants must enroll in Elizabethtown Community and Technical College prior to registering for the class.
    • Upon completion, all applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age.
    • High School Diploma or GED or High School Senior with GPA of 2.0 or higher to enroll.
    • Not be convicted of a felony offense (Contact KY Board of EMS 859-256-3565 to determine if an offense would prevent KY certification).
    • ALL First Responders, EMT-Basics, Paramedics, and Instructors applying for Initial Certification/Licensure, Reciprocity, or Reinstatement must have a Background Check. The background checks are free, and with your permission will be submitted for you by the SFRT office or to obtain a personal background check and/or find information and instructions on how to obtain the background check visit the Kentucky Court of Justice webpage.
    • Hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license (submitted at the end of class).
    • Take the COMPASS test for admission (talk to your advisor about requirements) and visit the ECTC Placement Testing webpage.
  • Enrollment
    • Follow ECTC registration and enrollment procedures, students may visit the ECTC Welcome Center or find information on admission.
  • Tuition, Fees, Books, and Certification
    • The EMT class is 6 college credit hours. Tuition includes a CPR card and liability insurance. You should determine your KCTCS tuition rates. In addition, Financial Aid may be available to those who have a Fire/Rescue major.
    • Books and Lab Kits are also required for the course. Books may be purchased at the ECTC Bookstore or from any reliable source. Information on lab kits will be provided by your instructor.
    • Testing and certification fees apply. Visit the Kentucky Board of EMS website and National Registry of EMTs website to learn more about EMT certification and re-certification requirements.
